I only had a few hours at SXSW 2026 and honestly? It was enough to completely blow my mind.
I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. SXSW is one of those events that feels larger than life from the outside. But experiencing even a small slice of it in person is something else entirely. From robots to celebrity interviews to way too many free snacks, here’s everything that stood out from my few hours in Austin. 🤖
Tesla Optimus Robot

The first thing I did was head to Fareground in downtown Austin where Tesla had set up a display featuring the Cybercab and two Optimus robots – and nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience.
The first robot was stationed near the crowd, just observing. And I mean observing – its head moved, its eyes tracked people, its movements were fluid and natural in a way that genuinely made me do a double take. It didn’t feel mechanical at all. It felt eerily, fascinatingly human. I stood there for a few minutes watching it and the crowd around me had the same expression – equal parts amazed and slightly unsettled in the best possible way.
The second Optimus was behind the bar. I walked up to it and it immediately started mirroring my movements – I threw up a peace sign, it mirrored me, I waved, it waved back, I made a heart with both my hands and it made the other half of the heart with one hand, completing it with me. I genuinely did not know what to do with myself 😭
And then – I pointed at a water bottle on the bar and it handed it to me.
I stood there holding that water bottle feeling like I had just glimpsed the future. Because honestly, I had. Watching Optimus interact so naturally with humans made me think about what a world full of robots handling physical and manual tasks could look like – and it felt less like science fiction and more like something that is actually coming. It was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced in my life, full stop.
Tesla Cybercab – Stepping Into the Future

Right next to Optimus was Tesla Cybercab and it deserves its own moment.
The exterior is sleek in a way that feels intentional – clean lines, minimal design, nothing flashy or over-engineered. But stepping up to look inside is where it really hits you. There is no steering wheel. No pedals. Nothing that resembles a traditional car interior at all. Just two incredibly spacious seats and a huge screen.
The minimalism felt deliberate and almost philosophical – like the design is saying that the future doesn’t need clutter. Sitting in that space (even just peering in) felt like stepping out of the chaos of everyday life into something calm and purposeful. I don’t know how else to describe it except that it made me feel genuinely excited about what transportation is going to look like in the next decade.
The Activations – Free Everything

After Tesla I headed over to the Congress Block Party at 900 Congress where brands had taken over the street with activations and honestly this was a highlight in the most fun, chaotic way possible.
The freebies were absolutely out of control – in the best way. Here’s what was happening:
Laura Geller was doing personalized shade matching and sending everyone home with a fanny pack containing a lipstick inside. As someone who is very particular about lipstick shades this was genuinely exciting. (Check out my lipstick roundup on the blog for my personal favorites!)
Einstein Energy was handing out free energy bars which I was very grateful for at that point in the day.
Austin Eastciders had two flavors to try – blue raspberry and tropical blast. Tropical blast was my favorite by a mile, incredibly refreshing and not too sweet.
Zevia was giving out drinks in the cutest little drink holders and was also handing out sweatshirts and hats. Free branded merch at an event hits different. 😄
Tano Skincare was running a giveaway prize for anyone who signed up – worth checking out if you’re into skincare.
Aguasol was giving out free tequila shots. That’s it, that’s the review. 🥃
The energy on Congress Street was electric – music, people, brands doing fun creative things to get your attention. It was genuinely one of the most fun brand experience environments I’ve ever walked through.
Podcast Movement Evolutions – Penn Badgley and a Night of Incredible Stories

The highlight of Day 3 (Saturday) was attending Podcast Movement Evolutions hosted by Companion Arts. JJ & the Mood Band along with Ayana Butterfly kept the energy alive throughout the night while a lineup of podcasters took the stage to give us a preview of their shows.
A few that really stood out:

Science and the City – Introduced by Kalpana Pot and Ashley, a fascinating concept that bridges science and urban life in an accessible way.
In the Hyphen – Fernando Hurtado’s podcast about the hyphenated identity experience resonated deeply and felt like a conversation that needs to be had more widely.
Everybody Knows But Me – Holly Brown’s introduction was genuinely one of the most memorable moments of the night. She had us reach under our seats where hidden eye masks were waiting, put them on, and took the entire audience on an immersive audio experience. In a room full of people who work in podcasting, that level of creativity stood out immediately.
Hey Man: The We Love You Podcast – Introduced by Andy Min and Thomas Sullivan, a warm and genuine concept that you could feel the passion behind.
Then Penn Badgley walked out.

If you know Penn from Gossip Girl or You, you already know he has a certain presence. But seeing him in person is a different thing entirely – he really does have that celebrity aura that you can’t manufacture. The room shifted the moment he came on stage.
He talked about Gossip Girl and what that era of his career meant to him. He got candid about playing Joe Goldberg in You – how emotionally taxing and heavy it was to inhabit that character. Additionally, he added that he has four kids now and he genuinely isn’t sure he would take on a role like that again. There was something really honest and grounded about the way he talked about the weight of that character and what it does to you as a person.
He also mentioned a new video game that will be launching soon which has me very curious. 👀
Hearing him speak was a genuine full circle moment – you watch someone on screen for years and then suddenly they’re right there talking about their life with complete authenticity. It was amazing.
Final Thoughts
I was at SXSW for just a few hours across two days and I left genuinely inspired, a little overwhelmed and already planning to go for the full experience next year. If you’re in Austin and on the fence about attending – go. Even a few hours is worth it.
The combination of technology, creativity, music, brand activations and genuine human connection that SXSW brings together is unlike anything else. Watching Optimus complete a heart with me in one moment and then listening to Penn Badgley talk about fatherhood an hour later – only at SXSW. 🤖🩷
