Easy Hot Mocha Latte Recipe (Better Than Starbucks)

5 from 2 votes
This hot mocha latte comes together in just 10 minutes using instant coffee, sugar, hot water, milk and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. The dalgona-style whipping technique creates a rich, frothy coffee base that tastes like a café latte — for a fraction of the price. All you need is a handheld milk frother and four simple ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp instant coffee (I use organic instant coffee from Sprouts – Nescafé works perfectly too)
  • 1/2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk (any milk works)
  • Chocolate syrup to taste

Equipment

  • 1 Handheld milk frother Super helpful and one of the best small investments you can make

Method

  1. Heat your milk: Put your milk on the stovetop over medium heat and bring it to a gentle boil. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t boil over – as soon as it starts to bubble around the edges it’s ready.
  2. Combine coffee and sugar: While the milk is heating, add the instant coffee and sugar to your mug. Using a mug rather than a separate bowl means one less thing to wash
  3. Add hot water: Boil 1/3 cup of water – either in the microwave for about 60 seconds or on the stovetop. Pour it into the mug with the coffee and sugar while it’s still hot. The heat is important here – it helps the coffee and sugar dissolve and whip up properly.
  4. Froth it up: Use a handheld milk frother to mix the coffee, sugar and water together. Within 30 seconds to 1 minute you’ll see it transform into a thick, airy coffee foam. This is the magic step – don’t skip it!
If you don’t have a frother then you whisk by hand but fair warning: it takes significantly longer and is genuinely an arm workout
  5. Add the milk: Pour your hot milk directly into the frothy coffee mixture. The foam will rise to the top creating that beautiful layered latte look.
  6. Add the chocolate syrup: Drizzle as much chocolate syrup as your heart desires over the top. A little gives you a subtly mocha flavor, a lot gives you full dessert-in-a-cup energy. Both are correct
  7. Mix and serve: Give everything a good stir to combine the chocolate syrup through the latte and serve immediately while hot.
