I moved to Austin from Chicago in 2022 and honestly – the adjustment was real.
Chicago has this jaw-dropping skyline, world-class architecture and an energy that hits you the moment you step outside. Austin felt quieter, more spread out, more understated. I remember thinking – okay, where is everything?
And then slowly, I started discovering it. The hidden hiking spots. The sunset views that make you stop mid-sentence. The food scene that genuinely rivals any city I’ve been to. The weird, wonderful, only-in Austin moments that sneak up on you when you least expect them.
Now? I love this city wholeheartedly. And every time friends or family visit, I get to watch them fall for it too – which never gets old.
Here is everything I show visitors when they come to town. Consider this your Austin local’s guide 👢

Must-See Austin Spots
1. Texas State Capitol

Let’s start with the most iconic. The Texas State Capitol is bigger than the US Capitol in Washington DC – and yes, everything really is bigger in Texas. Furthermore, the building is stunning both inside and out and the grounds are beautiful for a stroll.
What most people don’t know is that they offer free guided tours Monday through Saturday from 9:00am to 4:15pm with the last tour departing at 4:15pm. On Sunday it runs from 12:00pm to 4:15pm. I highly recommend doing the guided tour over just walking around on your own – the history and stories bring the whole place to life. It’s genuinely one of the best free things you can do in Austin.
Tips: Check the Texas State Capitol website for the most current tour schedule before you go. Consider taking a rideshare as parking can be tricky 🏛️
2. The Oasis on Lake Travis

The Oasis is Austin’s self-proclaimed “sunset capital of Texas” and it absolutely earns that title. Perched on the cliffs above Lake Travis, this multi-level restaurant and entertainment complex has one of the most breathtaking sunset views you will ever see.
Every evening when the sun sets they ring a bell and the whole crowd cheers together. It’s become a beloved Austin tradition and there’s something genuinely magical about that collective moment.
Bonus tip: Lake Travis also has zip lining nearby – a really fun add-on to a sunset visit.
3. Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is my go-to for an early morning visit. It’s Austin’s highest point and the short climb up the steps rewards you with a stunning panoramic view of the Colorado River, Lake Austin and the most beautiful collection of millionaire homes lining the riverbank 😄
There’s something about standing up there in the morning quiet with that view that makes you take a deep breath and feel genuinely grateful. It’s one of those spots that never gets old.
Tips: Go early morning to avoid crowds and catch the best light. Park for free at the base of Mount Bonnell (Covert Park). But be careful and don’t leave any valuable belongings visible in your car.
4. Pennybacker Bridge Hike

If Mount Bonnell is the quick morning reset, Pennybacker Bridge is for when you want to feel properly immersed in nature. The hike is short but the payoff is incredible – sweeping vies of the Colorado River and the iconic pink granite bridge from above. It feels like a secret discovery even though it’s right in the city.
Tips: Wear shoes with grip – the terrain is rocky and uneven. Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the Texas heat. Free to visit.
5. South Congress (SoCo)

SoCo is where Austin’s personality really shines. South Congress Avenue is full of independent boutiques, vintage shops, authentic Texas boot and hat stores, street art and food trucks that capture everything quirky and wonderful about this city.
A few things I always do on SoCo:
Jo’s Coffee – an Austin institution. The outdoor patio is iconic and the “I Love You So Much” mural net door is one of Austin’s most photographed spots. A must stop ☕
Summer House on Music Lane – beautiful, airy and perfect for brunch or a coffee break. The interiors are stunning.
Mañana Coffee – charming coffee shop with great vibes and even better coffee.
La La Land Kind Cafe – known for its kindness-focused ethos and delicious drinks. A feel-good stop.
The $1 hand painted Texas cards – right next to Jo’s there’s a machine selling the most adorable hand painted cards of Texas things for just a dollar and some change. Such a sweet little find and a perfect souvenir 🤠
Whether you’re shopping for your first pair of Texas boots or just soaking in the local energy, SoCo is a non-negotiable stop.
6. Get Out on the Water – Lady Bird Lake

No Austin trip is complete without getting out on the water. Lady Bird Lake – affectionately called Town Lake by locals – sits right in the heart of the city and is one of Austin’s most beloved features.
You can kayak or paddleboard but my personal favorite way to experience it is by renting a retro boat from Retro Boats ATX. There is something so uniquely Austin about cruising around Lady Bird Lake in a vintage boat with the downtown skyline as your backdrop. It’s relaxed, it’s fun and it’s genuinely one of those experiences that makes you think – okay, I get why people love this city so much.
Tips: Book in advance especially on weekends – they fill up fast.
7. The Austin Mural on South 1st St
Austin is full of incredible street art and murals – it’s part of what makes the city so visually interesting. The Austin sign on 1720 S 1st St is one worth seeking out. Nearby is the Bouldin Creek cafe – a beloved Austin cafe with a creative, laid-back vibe with great vegan options. Combine the mural visit with brunch plans and you’ve got a perfect little afternoon. [Look at Image at Top of Page for reference]
8. Live Music – Austin Gardens & Studio

Austin is the live music capital of the world and it earns that title every single night of the week. Music spills out of venues, bars and street corners everywhere you go – it’s woven into the fabric of the city in a way that’s hard to describe until you experience it yourself.
For live music, Austin Gardens & Studio + IFKYK is the spot!
Food and Coffee in Austin
Austin’s food scene is genuinely one of its best kept secrets. Here are my personal favorites that I take every visitor to:
1. Mozart’s Coffee Roasters:
Mozart’s is one of those places that feels like a secret even though everyone knows it. This lakeside coffee shop sits right on the water with the most relaxed, unhurried energy of any place in Austin. Order their famous espresso shake, find a seat overlooking the lake and just stay a while.
Pro tip: Visit on a Tuesday evening for live music – it transforms the whole experience and is one of Austin’s most underrated free entertainment nights 🎵
2. Desnudo Coffee
One of Austin’s absolute best coffee spots – Desnudo is known for exceptional quality and a no-nonsense approach to coffee. If you’re serious about your coffee this is a must visit.
3. Swedish Hill – Westlake

If you consider yourself a croissant person – and honestly everyone should – Swedish Hill is non-negotiable. The croissants here are genuinely some of the best I’ve had anywhere and I moved from Chicago which has no shortage of great bakeries. Buttery, flakey, perfectly golden. Worth every mile of the drive 🥐
3. Patrizi’s
A hidden gem that every Austin local holds close to their heart. Tucked away in a courtyard, this outdoor Italian pasta restaurant serves some of the best pasta and garlic bread in the city. The atmosphere is unpretentious and wonderful – string lights, picnic tables, great wine and incredible food.
4. Bulevar Mexican Kitchen or Santa Catarina – Mexican Food
For the best Mexican food in Austin, Bulevar and Santa Catarina are both exception. Austin’s proximity to Mexico means the Mexican food scene here is genuinely outstanding and these two are at the top of the list.
5. Veracruz All Natural – Food Truck
No Austin food guide is complete without mentioning Veracruz All Natural. This beloved food truck serves some of the most incredible tacos and fresh juices you will ever have. It’s a rite of passage for any Austin visitor 🌮
6. Franklin Barbecue
No Austin food guide is complete without mentioning Franklin Barbecue. It is widely considered one of the best BBQ spots in the world and locals and tourists alike will tell you it’s a non-negotiable Austin experience. Yes there is a famously long line. Yes everyone says it’s worth it. If you’re a meat lover visiting Austin, consider this your official sign to go. 🍖
Best Rooftop Spots in Austin

Austin has a surprisingly incredible rooftop bar scene and the views of the city and the Colorado River from above are stunning. Here are my favorites:
Nido: A beautiful rooftop with great food and drinks and stunning views of the city. Very aesthetic and a wonderful spot for a sunset drink.
P6 at The Line Hotel: This one has a special bonus! In addition to the beautiful views and yummy cocktails, you can watch the famous Congress Avenue bats fly out from under the bridge at dusk. This rooftop provides completely different vantage point than just standing on the bridge. Absolutely worth it for the bat experience alone 🦇
Edge Rooftop: Great city views and a lively atmosphere. One of the most popular rooftop spots in Austin for a reason.
Arriba Abajo: A fun vibrant rooftop with a great cocktail menu and incredible views. The energy here is always great.
Day Trips from Austin
Austin’s location in the Texas Hill Country means some trule beautiful day trip options within easy driving distance:
Fredricksburg: About 1.5 hours west of Austin, Fredricksburg is a charming German-influenced small town for its wineries, peach orchards, boutique shopping and incredible food. The main street is absolutely adorable and the surrounding Hill Country vineyards are beautiful. Indeed, aA beautiful full day trip – especially in spring when the wildflowers are blooming 🍷
Marble Falls: About an hour northwest of Austin, Marble Falls is a beautiful lakeside town with great restaurants, outdoor activities on Lake Marble Falls and the stunning Blue Hole swimming spot nearby. It’s a relaxed scenic escape from the city that doesn’t require much planning 💙
Practical Austin Tips
Getting around: Austin is a car city – public transportation is limited so plan on driving or using rideshare for most spots.
Best time to visit: Spring (March-May) and Fall(September-November) are ideal – warm and sunny without the brutal summer heat. SXSW in March is an incredible time to visit if you want the full Austin cultural experience. (I just went to SXSW 2026 – check out my recap post!)
Weather: Texas weather is unpredictable. As a result, always check the forecast and bring layers especially in spring and fall.
Heat: If you’re visiting in summer, plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening and stay hydrated. Texas summer heat is no joke 🥵
